Nysander holds the cup and Mardus the wooden disks-one of which was responsible for Seregil's coma-but the crown must still be located. But this cup, combined with a crystal crown and some wooden disks, forms the Helm of Seriamaius, and any mortal donning the reconstructed Helm will become the incarnation of the god on earth. In a secret, silver-lined room hidden well beneath the Oreska, he has served for most of his 300 years as the keeper of a nondescript clay cup. Seregil's friend and Mentor, the wizard Nysander, has long been the guardian of a deadly secret. Now, an ancient prophecy points to his continuing role in the quest to stop Mardus in his dread purpose. The early attempts at this reincarnation-masterminded by the sinister Duke Mardus and his sorcerous minion Vargul Ashnazai-once left Seregil in a sorcerous coma. The Plenimarans, at war with Skalans, have decided to defeat their ancient enemy by raising up the Dead God, Seriamaius. With the Leran threat laid to rest, Alec and Seregil are now able to turn their attention to the ancient evil which threatens their land. We tend to view cult members with disdain, judge them as naïve at best or unintelligent at worst. On the cult front, I was most surprised to learn that pretty much anyone can be taken in by a cult if you catch them at the right-or wrong-time in their life. I also did a ton of research on mentalism, self-help retreats, fear, pain, and persuasion. I read books and articles and listened to podcasts about some of the most famous cults: Peoples Temple, Heaven's Gate, the Manson Family, FLDS, the Rajneeshpuram community, and NXIVM. What kind of research did you do for the novel? Did anything surprise you? It explores the light and dark sides of belief. This Might Hurt is a story about pain, fear, and endurance. I think the opening scene is the most gruesome! From there, the action becomes significantly less… repulsive. With a title like This Might Hurt, is there anything you'd like to warn readers about before they dip in? Interview Stephanie Wrobel discusses her second novel, This Might Hurt, set inside an East Coast cult. The bill defined the territorial applicability to entire British India, Princely states, and Burma. The earliest attempt by Indians to draft the constitution was the ‘Constitution of India Bill-1895’ or the Swaraj Bill (author unknown). The roots of the Fundamental rights and the directive principles lie in the Freedom Struggle. The biographer of the Indian constitution, Granville Austin calls them the ‘Conscience of the Constitution.’ The core commitment to social revolution lies in Part III and Part IV of the constitution dealing with fundamental rights and directive principles of state policy. The framers of the Indian constitution had a larger goal of ushering a social revolution and creating a fundamental change in the structure of Indian society. As we celebrate the 70th Republic day, let us remind ourselves that the constitution of India went beyond the pledge to create a sovereign and democratic republic. The only con would be at times, the dialogue between the characters did not flow flawlessly, it felt somewhat awkward, not a huge con, this was still a good book that I enjoyed reading. The author’s writing style kept me engaged. The characters were created in a way that made you feel like you were there, there was also character growth throughout the story. I loved how the author not only did the queer romance eloquently but also tacked the societal issue of women making a decision to not have children, our society has taught us that women must have children, so to see it in a different light was amazing. The insta-love trope was great, I know a lot of people do not like that type of trope, but it does not bother me. The characters struggled with the cheating and it showed the other side of it, which I could appreciate. While the cheating trope is not my favorite, there are times that it does not bother me. My Thoughts: This is a sapphic romance novel. I requested a digital advanced readers copy from Creative James Media and Laura May and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased. Emma embodies Rousseau’s male qualities, while Harriet represents the female qualities. Instead, Rousseau’s male-female educational relationship exists between Emma and Harriet. Headstrong and independent, Emma does not have Rousseau’s “lovable ignorance” (410). Knightley and Emma’s relationship embodies the educational quality of Rousseau, Emma is not Rousseau’s ideal woman. However, in her later novels, Austen begins to reject 1 and even critique Rousseau’s ideals (Cohen 217-18). Many female novelists, including Austen, were influenced by Emile, and Austen draws on Rousseau’s model of male-female relationships in her early work to structure her plot and develop her characters. Prior to being married, women were not to be educated outside of what would be attractive to men. Largely focused on the education of young men, Emile posits that, once a man is educated, he is responsible for educating his wife. His book, Emile, or On Education, was an immensely popular treatise on education, in which Rousseau stresses the molding of young minds. Emma’s desire to shape Harriet reflects the views of the 18th-century philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. she would form her opinions and manners” (Austen 23). When first introduced to Harriet Smith, Emma Woodhouse reflects to herself that “ he would notice she would improve her. McWilliams’ portrayal of grief is well written and appropriately nuanced readers will feel angry and sad and will cheer for Harriet all at the same time. Harriet decides to use social media to fight back and spread the truth about plantations. First, a celebrity wedding is scheduled and then her prom is booked there. Her temper has led her to distance herself even from those closest to her, but when a White actor buys the plantation next door-turning it into a wedding venue-Harriet needs help from friends. Since her mom’s death from cancer, Harriet has also had trouble regulating her emotions, and when her “rage monster” shows up, she blacks out and loses control. Harriet loves being a tour guide teaching visitors the hard truth about Westwood, even when the weight of its tragic history takes an emotional toll on her. Westwood is an outlier in the area, not only because it is owned by Black people, but also because it’s not a bed-and-breakfast: Harriet and her parents moved to the former sugar cane plantation when she was 9 and restored it into a museum honoring the enslaved people who lived and worked there. High school senior Harriet Douglass lives on a former plantation in Louisiana. |
